Checking out a file in SharePoint

SharePoint is a collaboration tool. It empowers people to share and edit files within an organization. Sometimes there might be cases where two or more people try to edit a file at the same time. So how does SharePoint deal with this situation?

It has a feature called as “Check Out”. It basically means that before you try to edit the document, you have to Check Out. And once you do that, no other person can edit that document at that point of time. In essence you have locked the document and no one can edit it.

In order to use this feature follow these steps-

  1. Goto the Document Library.
  2. Scroll down to the file you want to edit.
  3. Click on the Elipsis Menu.
  4. And Select Check Out.

Now your document is locked and you don’t have to worry about anyone editing it 🙂
